General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Minister Maithripala Sirisena assured that members of the United National Party (UNP) who cast their vote in favour for the proposed Constitutional Amendments today (8th) would be given total protection by the Government.

Minister Maithripala gave this assurance yesterday (8th) in reply to an inquiry asking if the Government will give legal and other assistance to UNP MPs who would get into trouble upon voting for the bill.

When asked whether the Government would offer Ministerial portfolios as a reward for voting in favour for the 18th Amendment, the General Secretary replied that the Government had not yet taken such a decision.

The Constitutional Reforms would need a 2/3 majority in the Parliament today to be passed. Minister Maithripala stated that the Government expects for the bill to be passed by 160 votes or more.
